What is ASTRA?
ASTRA (ASsessment of TRAnsport Strategies) is an integrated assessment model applied since more than 20 years for strategic policy assessment in the transport and energy field. It covers EU27 Countries plus Great Britain, Norway and Switzerland, and integrates nine modules linked together in manifold ways: a vehicle fleet model, transport model, emission and accident models, population model, foreign trade and economic model with input-output tables, government, employment and investment models.
The model is based on the System Dynamics approach and built in VensimĀ®; it runs until the year 2050 and provides sophisticated tools for sensitivity analyses.
ASTRA consists of different modules, each related to one specific aspect such as the economy, transport demand or the vehicle fleet. The main modules cover population, economy, foreign trade, transport, vehicle fleet and environment.
Model Development
The ASTRA model has been developed since 1997 by IWW Karlsruhe and TRT Trasporti e Territorio first under the coordination of Prof. Werner Rothengatter and later of Dr. Wolfgang Schade. Since 2005, the model has been improved and maintained in the course of various projects by Fraunhover ISI and TRT. Starting from 2015, M-Five is part of the team for the development of the model.

ASTRA is currently developed by TRT, M-Five and Fraunhofer
